Automated Bag Depalletizing in a Chemical Manufacturing Facility

2025.12.17.

  • Challenge

A chemical manufacturing facility received raw materials and finished goods up to 55 lb bags that required manual depalletizing and transfer. The labor-intensive process exposed workers to ergonomic strain, frequent injuries, and inconsistent efficiency. In addition, bag deformation and handling variability made it difficult to depalletize reliably without damaging the bags.

  • Solutions

CMES Robotics deployed a 3D Vision–based Depalletizing Solution designed to accurately recognize the position, height, and shape of each bag, even when deformation is severe.
A custom-engineered gripper applies the appropriate pressure for each material type and fill level, preventing product damage and ensuring stable handling.

The system’s compact layout and installation design allow it to operate efficiently in tight spaces, maximizing overall workflow productivity inside the chemical plant.

  • Result

Automation significantly reduced product damage and material loss while one robot replaced up to seven manual workers, easing labor demands and stabilizing operations. The solution also lowered injury risk from heavy handling and achieved a payback period of just over a year.
